[VOICE POST]
Today is Phaesday-- at least, it should be. I gather it's called by a different name, in this whorl. I have been here since Hieraxday, and spent Thelxday exploring this City, aided by the guide with which the Archive has provided me. And trying to understand what goes on in this glass, though that's proving rather difficult. Especially yesterday, with all the... pictures of cats? Certainly mysterious, as befits Thelxiepeia; though cats are Sphigx's. Perhaps it is not for me to understand. Perhaps being here is part of my task. I think for the moment I must accept my ignorance and trust in the Outsider. I do not know if the Nine can hear or aid me here (I've read that this place has its own gods, who appear in this glass as ours do in our windows,) but I feel certain the Outsider can, though I expect no aid in my task.
Eden, Raven, Ivy-- again, thank you for aiding me in understanding the situation. I hope I didn't inconvenience you too greatly with all my questions. And-- Raven, I hope you are well, after yesterday...
In any case, I find myself woefully in need of assistance. If there is no way to return to Viron, I shall need a place to stay and some means of employment. Though augurs are forbidden to beg, if anyone is willing to assist me I would be most grateful.
As I understand it, you do not practice augury here, or worship as we do in my whorl... which leaves me at a bit of a loss, since that is what I have studied in my whole life. The schola prepares us to teach and to pray, but to live, we depend upon our stipend from the Chapter and the goodwill of the people who attend manteion. I can write and read, and thankfully the language here seems to be close enough to Vironese that I understand most of you... I can sacrifice, of course, and read the signs in the offerings... I would teach, but I have always tended to the religious aspect of the children's instruction; I haven't Maytera Marble's knack for mathematics, or Maytera Mint's way with the young ones. Goodness, what would the Sibyls say to see this place? I do wish Maytera Marble was here; she knows more of the short-sun whorl than anyone I have ever met, and I can't help but wonder... Well, I've left my point behind, haven't I? I can maintain and to some extent repair Sacred Windows, though I don't believe there are any here. I had been maintaining the buildings on Sun Street, though I am not as adept at mending roofs as I would like to be, but the buildings here are rather different to begin with. I would like to think I am a quick study and would be happy to do whatever needs doing, to the best of my abilities...
As for living arrangements, I do not need much space. I brought nearly nothing with me, and had little at home to begin with. I am quiet and happy to help with the household chores, and to aid you in any way I can. I do not know what else to say to recommend myself and I fear I've spoken too long as it is!
May all the gods and the Outsider smile upon you.

Date: 2008-08-15 05:27 pm (UTC)Where are you from?
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 05:43 pm (UTC)I'm from Viron, which is in another whorl, of course, so I will not be surprised if you've never heard of it. And yourself? And by what name might I call you? I am Silk-- Patera Silk, I should say, though the title carries no weight here.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 05:48 pm (UTC)Woaaah. Slow down there, buddy, friend, Silk -- or Patera. Patera Silk, there.
Uhhh, I definitely haven't heard of Viron. I'm Veronica. Veronica Mars, but just call me Veronica.
(OOC: oh my god. IDK his canon, but he is hot. AND WOAH, HIS SPEECH IS CONFUSING. X.X; Nicely played though!)
Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 05:59 pm (UTC)I am a foolish man, I'm afraid-- here I meant to clarify things, and I am confusing you more. It's a pleasure to meet you, Veronica. Have you been in the City long?
[ooc: ahehe, no one knows his canon. yey obscure. xD i am not really sure who his PB is, some kid actor/model, but he is purty! if maybe a little too young in most pics D: I am sorry he's so tealdeer but omg it's fun to mess with people. >D this might help explain, a little? :3]
Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 06:07 pm (UTC)Just a few days, yourself? And don't worry, I hear I get confused often. It's not a fault of yours. Nice to meet you, Silk.
[Another pause]
.. It is Silk, right? Or is Patera your first name?
(OOC: Totally helps! BTW: HE'S SO CUTE. His little embarrassed laugh? T__T I AM. SO. WON. OVER. alskjskla I LOVE IT.)
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 06:11 pm (UTC)And yes, Silk is my name, Patera is a title. It means I am an augur.
[ooc: haha, i thought it best to make a glossary. XD even i find him a bit hard to read! and i am glad you like him! ^_^]
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 06:50 pm (UTC)Er... [pause] An augur?
(OOC: Approval for wise ideas. ♥)
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 07:01 pm (UTC)Eden-- she's someone I met here-- says they call augurs "priests," in her whorl. Augurs.. we pray, we sacrifice to the gods, we study the Writings, teach the children of our quarter, read omens and cast lots, that kind of thing? The men are augurs, the women who help are Sybils; women can't be augurs, men can't be Sybils, but both serve the gods. Does that make any sense?
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 01:52 am (UTC)She pauses, like she's adjusting or considering something.]
Er. [Sorta off at first.] That's all fine and dandy, butters and rainbows, but--
What do you sacrifice, exactly?
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 02:16 am (UTC)Lambs are a popular offering, for most of the gods, though the color affects which gods they can be dedicated to; Hierax and Tartaros, for example, can be offered black lambs but should not have white; gray animals cannot be offered to the Nine, but can be offered to all the gods collectively, or to a minor god. Bulls are often offered to Pas, fish to Scylla, serpents to Echidna, and so forth... Rabbits, or doves, to Kypris, who favored my manteion with a theophany...
As an augur I make the sacrifice, and I read the omens, though of course the Sibyls assist. The sacrificial meat is first offered to the donor of the victim, and passed out among the congregation if the donor refuses their share.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 02:42 am (UTC)Victims? Nice way to put it. [Wow, he might just be a shade grey out of crazy, or maybe, just different.] Scylsday is Sunday, I think. So you're really a priest, huh?
[She debates this.]
Do you enjoy your religion there? And-- doves? You guys do not sacrifice doves.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 03:21 am (UTC)I suppose I am 'really' a priest, if that's more or less what priests do in your whorl. World, I think you say?
It's not really a matter of enjoying religion, I don't believe. There are men who enjoy killing, both animals and other men, and I am not one. As I was telling the children last week; we do not sacrifice animals to the gods because they are worthless, but because they are worth so much-- we do it to show our devotion. And also to serve the congregation; the people of our quarter rarely eat so well as they did on Scylsday, when we had a number of animals presented by a wealthy donor.
As to the doves... They're sacred to Kypris; I promised them to her when she-- [He pauses, seeming a little uncertain of whether he ought to continue.] Kypris blessed me with a theophany, you see, in a glass at Orchid's house, and so I promised to sacrifice to her as soon as I could. Those are her favored offerings... Doves, or big white rabbits. She came to our Window, when I did sacrifice to her. It was... [Pauses, at a loss for words.] I could never forget it, even if I lived forever.

Date: 2008-08-15 07:35 pm (UTC)The same offer goes for you, Silk.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 07:43 pm (UTC)Sphigxday, then Scylsday-- the first day of the week, the markets are closed and we hold public services in the manteion-- Molpsday, Tarsday, Hieraxday, Thelxday and Phaesday again... The sounds are almost similar, don't you think? Some of them, at least... how curious.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 08:01 pm (UTC)That almost sounds like Azar.I don't really mind. There's bound to be some culture-clash in a place like this; might as well take the opportunity to learn more, right? You're right, they do. I wonder if their origins are also similar in some way. You mentioned them being named after your gods... I know that our days are named after the old Norse gods, with Sunday and Monday being named after the sun and the moon.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 08:43 pm (UTC)How curious... I wonder if these gods are related to ours? Scylla does not rule the sun; Pas does, but Scylla is his oldest daughter. I am not certain what the moon is, though...
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 08:53 pm (UTC)Maybe. There might be some literature in the Library that can help with that-- you don't have a moon? It's a satellite that orbits planets and reflects the sun's light at night. Though I guess it's entirely possible yours doesn't have a moon...
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 08:58 pm (UTC)Is your whorl like this one, then? I mean the way the sun is. Ours is long, a band across the sky, and beyond it are the skylands. Though you can only really see them at night, when the shade passes over the sun and the light illuminates the skylands instead. There's some light from the skylands, but they don't move, so I don't think you would call them a moon.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 09:03 pm (UTC)[a pause; she's considering that] ... yes, I guess it is. We have a sun and a moon and ... if I didn't know better, I could mistake this City for any other large city on Earth. Is "whorl" what you call your world?
[Voice] || ahahaha sorry he's so tldr. >_>
Date: 2008-08-15 09:24 pm (UTC)In my whorl, we sometimes speak of the short-sun whorl, which perhaps had a moon; I don't know much about it, unfortunately. The only people who remember it at all are chems, and many of them are in a state of decline, and cannot recall much. Though I met a woman-- her name was Mamelta-- who remembered it as well. She had been sleeping, deep underground, but woke when she was possessed. By Mucor, who I feared had possessed you; I drove her out of the woman and Mamelta led me on through a vast room full of people sleeping.
I traveled deep beneath the ground, and we came to a place Mamelta called the "belly of the whorl," which was very strange-- I climbed down a staircase and found a sort of great bubble of what can't have been glass. I could see a flat plane of rock-- shiprock, I guess, though I could not touch it-- and beyond it blackness, full of sparks, small and bright and distant. The sky here, nightside, looked a little like that... only not so big, nor so... empty.
[Voice] || it's okay 8D neither of us mind
Date: 2008-08-15 09:36 pm (UTC)demonspirit? It sounds like you caught a glimpse of outer space. But... from the belly of your world? As far as I know, space surrounds worlds- planets- not the other way around.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 09:49 pm (UTC)I don't really know what I saw, or what to call it. Mamelta called it the whorl's belly, and she seemed to understand things much better than I. I think it does surround the whorl, somehow; beyond the whorl, though I don't know how that can be. I said before that I was enlightened; when the Outsider spoke to me, I saw the same thing-- blackness, deep and thick like fine velvet, touched with lights; deep beneath our feet.
I understood it, in a way, for that moment outside time; I remember that I knew so many things, but not what those things were.

Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 09:08 pm (UTC)If you need a place to stay, I live in a very, very large apartment with several other roommates and we've got an empty room.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 09:34 pm (UTC)Thank you for the offer! I do hate to impose, but under the circumstances it seems I have no other recourse. I will try not to inconvenience you too greatly!
Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 09:40 pm (UTC)I doubt that you'll be any inconvenience at all. We're in building 2, apartments 214 and 215.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-15 10:09 pm (UTC)Thank you so much-- I can't begin to properly express my gratitude. I will find my way there!
Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 05:02 am (UTC)Just saying thanks works. Also, I don't know how much... technology you use, but my magic can cause problems with it, so if you're bringing anything electronic and sensitive I'll get someone else to meet you at the door.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 05:26 am (UTC)I have nothing with me but my beads and my gammadion; everything else I lost in Lake Limna, or else, had stolen by councillor Lemur... I'm not entirely sure what you mean by electronic, but as they've survived this long I am sure it will be fine. I had an azoth, which perhaps magic might harm, but Doctor Crane has that still, back in the whorl.
Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 07:15 am (UTC)Most of the nouns that you used, I didn't understand at all. Electronic means powered by electricity. Think stored lightning released at controlled intervals.
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 03:48 pm (UTC)Ah... I don't think any of my things are electronic, then, though if I were a chem I'd be concerned. My beads are just beads, and the gammadion is forged metal. I understand your meaning, though. There is a primary cable in my manteion whose insulation has gone, and one must be careful to step over it; if you tread upon it, it often sparks and shocks, like a Window in disrepair will if you're not careful.
The beads and gammadion I will be happy to show you; the azoth of course I cannot. It is... It is shaped like the hilt of a sword with no blade. The demon on the one I used (though it was not mine) was a large, red bloodstone, and when you pressed it down below the level of the hilt the blade came to be. Although I'm not certain I can explain what the blade of an azoth is; I don't understand it myself. It is like a stream of nothingness, dividing what you cut with it. I killed a talus with it-- a talus is a sort of machine-- in self-defense, which I greatly regret.
The glass I have been using to access this-- to, to talk to people here? is not mine; it seems to be for public use as others have used it when I was not, so I will not be bringing that with me. A glass is like a Sacred Window, I am more sure than ever, and must be electronic as you would say.
Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 04:34 pm (UTC)Wow, you sure do type a lot.I'd like to see the beads and the gammadion. And an azoth sounds very interesting. I think that a lot of things that you have in your world might have similar objects here with slightly different ways of making them do what they do.[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 05:37 pm (UTC)I think you are correct. For example, I have been using something like what I would call a "glass"... But ours have monitors, a sort of gray face that is a part of the machine. You tell the monitor the name of the person with whom you'd like to speak, and they connect you to that person's glass. This device is much like a glass but has no monitor; I thought perhaps it was damaged, and was endeavoring to repair it with an arm of the gammadion when I seem to have activated it. Pas, god of mechanisms, may watch us still.
[ooc: hee, would you like to log? or would you prefer to assume he just shows up? ^^]
Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 06:26 pm (UTC)We would call these computers, and a lot of them do have monitors.
[ooc: I would be more than happy to log!]
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 06:46 pm (UTC)I do have a lot to learn, it seems. From what I have seen they are much like Sacred Windows, though of course smaller, and considerably more complex.
[ooc: :D I will put one up in just a bit then, unless you prefer to start. ^^]
Re: [Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 07:42 pm (UTC)I'm sure you'll catch on quickly.
[ooc: Nope, go ahead! And sorry for the delay, unexpected company. >.<]
[Voice]
Date: 2008-08-16 08:55 pm (UTC)[Pause] Well, perhaps it would be best if I explained in person. It might take some time. [Soft laugh]
[ooc: no worries! i may be slow on tags too, this evening. ^^; here ya go! :D]
