[A rather startled young man in a red tunic flickers into view, fiddling with the controls of his newfound network device. He’s clean-shaven, but his blonde hair is disheveled. Keen blue eyes peer at the camera for a moment before he begins to speak.]

Forgive me for not addressing you with the proper respect—I’m afraid I don’t recognize any of you, nor am I certain where I am, although certainly it is not where I expected to be! My name is Silk— Patera Silk, I should say— of Viron, and…

[Silk pauses, glancing uneasily offscreen, stroking a cheek thoughtfully with his thumb. His gaze returns to the screen.]

I have learned that the gods can use a glass—I presume even one as odd as this!—as easily as a Window… And yet this is unlike any theophany I have ever w— [Pause.] —heard of. Ah...

[Murmuring something under his breath, the man quickly traces a plus sign in the air in front of him.]

Could... someone tell me, is this Mainframe?

Eden? I've never met anyone with that name, though it has a familiar ring to it... Perhaps it is mentioned somewhere in the Writings, though unfortunately the context escapes me at the moment.

Well, I am glad to meet you, Eden. I find I'm at a bit of a loss... I can't imagine where I might be but Mainframe; and yet, I didn't expect it would be so wholly unfamiliar. I hate to impose, but could you tell me-- what is this place?

The Chrasmologic Writings, I mean. Have you never seen them? I've heard that some outside Viron do not read them as we do, though the only man I've ever met from another city-- from Trivigaunte, as a matter of fact-- seemed quite familiar with them... Though given his occupation I suppose he'd have to. The Writings are, more or less, the only hints we are given to the Plan of Pas; written by men who understood the whorl not only as it was, but as was yet to come.

The... Hmn. I was heading on my way back to what I would call the city-- to Viron, I mean-- but I ended up here, somehow. I hesitate to say it-- I can't really believe it!-- but this doesn't even seem to be the whorl I know.

Phaesday is the sixth day of the week. It's Hieraxday, or was when I left, which is the fourth day. Perhaps you name them differently here?

Raven is a familiar sort of name, though I've never known anyone by it before, not that I can think of at least. I assume you're not Vironese, though?

How strange... there are seven days in your week, as well? Ours are named after the gods; all but Pas and Echidna, of course.

Well, I don't know any Ravens personally (or I should say, I didn't,) but I'm sure there are some in Viron. Many women name their sons after birds; I know an Auk and a Crane, for instance. It's a Vironese-sounding name, I should have said, rather than familiar.

You needn't call me mister-- Patera would be all right, if you wish to use a title, but Silk alone works just as well. What name may I call you by..?

I suppose I am a newcomer, yes... I was riding back from Limna and fell off my donkey, and landed... well, here. I thought perhaps it was Mainframe, though I hardly think such a light fall could have killed me!

You are not necessarily dead - only some come here after they've died, the larger part just ends up in this place by accident. It appears the same happened to you.

To my knowledge, it is a unique place.

I must admit that's a relief! I don't feel particularly dead, but I don't know what the dead should feel like, either. Theodidacts sometimes visit Mainframe while still alive, but that hardly seems likely, either.

It is both who and what I am.

This is not Mainframe, I assure you. It is simply called the City. People from all dimensions, times and places end up here through no actino of their own. It is not something we have control over.

Some people have taken to calling me Ivy, for they don't think the Archive is a proper name for a child.

You are welcome. There is a guide to the City, if you want it? There does not seem to be a way to get back - people do sometimes return to their worlds, but that, too, is not in their control.

It is quite a lot to take in all at once.

Ivy is a lovely name for a young lady. Girls in Viron are always named after plants or flowers, though I gather that may not be the case in this whorl.

A guide would probably be helpful, thank you.

I am a bit dismayed that there's no way to get home... I shudder to think of what will happen in Viron.
