An augur leads services in the manteion-- leads prayers and offers sacrifices, reads the omens in the offerings, casts the holy lots, maintains the Sacred Windows and implores the gods to speak.
We offer sacrifices out of respect and love, and the gods accept them because they are dear to us, and they recognize the love in what we have done. The gods speak through them, as well-- since we read the offerings-- and so I'd argue that it is not 'without need.' Although there is at least one among the gods who has been known to refuse sacrifice...
